Togo: Random Facts and Trivia

Some random facts and trivia for the country of the world Togo, the Togolese people and history of the tribes, the assassin ruler.

The Togolese people have the dubious honor of being one of the few modern nations to be ruled by an assassin. President Eyadema claims to have fired the shots that killed Togo's 1st President, Sylvanus Olympio, in 1963.

Angry efforts toward tribal unification occupy the Ewe leaders. Arbitrarily divided 3 ways at the end of W. W. I, the Ewes found themselves scattered among British Togoland (170,000), Gold Coast (which later became Ghana--250,000) and French Togoland (200,000). With the incorporation of British Togoland into Ghana, the French Togolese Ewes stepped up their efforts toward complete tribal unity. Nkrumah tried to incorporate Togo into Ghana, but Togolese leaders resisted. The result was the termination of relations between the 2 countries; the borders remain closed today, and the Ewes continue to fight to become one people again.
