Size--269 sq. mi. (696 sq. km.). Population--100,000.
Named the Friendly Islands by Capt. James Cook, Tonga consists of 150 islands in the South Pacific east of Fiji. Tonga is a monarchy which became independent on June 4, 1970. Although oil exploration and encouragement of tourism may bring changes, the economy is now based almost entirely on agriculture. When a Tongan male reaches the age of 16 he is entitled to 8 1/4 acres of land for cultivation. A group of Southern California businessmen has claimed ownership of a coral reef in what Tonga considers its territorial waters. They have announced that the reef is now the "Republic of Minerva."
