United Arab Emirates: Location, History, Size, Population, & Government
About the United Arab Emirates, information, history size, location, population, people, culture, and government.
United Arab Emirates (formerly Trucial States)
Size--32,300 sq. mi. (83,650 sq. km.). Population--275,000.
Along the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman are 7 tiny sheikhdoms, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras al-Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm al-Qaiwain, and Ajman, which joined together in 1971-1972 to form the United Arab Emirates. Oil is the source of the comparatively great wealth of the UAE, although smuggling is quite important in Dubai. Over $250 million in goods enters Dubai, but there is no record of how much is reexported or where it goes. The large population of foreign nationals (over 50% of the total UAE population) has few rights and constitutes a badly exploited and discontent work force. It consists, for the most part, of men without families.
