--A congressional committee reported that of 100,000 industrial workers producing $2,430,000 worth of goods a year, almost 2 out of 3 were women and girls.

--The 2nd Bank of the U.S. was chartered.

--New horse-racing mile record set at 1:47 by Timoleon.

Jan. 1 Public debt stood at $127,335,000, amounting to about $15 per person.

June The 1st gas company was established in Baltimore, Md., to provide coal gas for lighting city streets.

Dec. 11 Indiana was admitted as a State.
