About the history of the United States in 1878, Edison patents the phonograph, the first bicycle is invented, workers in San Francisco demand work.
--Edison took out a patent on the phonograph.
--A new vehicle, called "Wheels," appeared in the streets of America. It consisted of a large wheel in front and a small wheel in back, and had a connecting bar and pad upon which the rider could seat himself while he pedaled precariously forward. This was the forerunner of the modern bicycle.
Jan. 3 Dennis Kearney led a procession of the unemployed to city hall in San Francisco to demand work or bread.
