Venezuela's high per capita income conceals great disparities in actual income among different sectors of the population. Caracas has been made a showplace of handsome modern high rises and intricate superhighways, but the hillsides surrounding the city are thick with "ranchos," or shanty huts, in which it is estimated live one million of the city's inhabitants.

A scant 3% of the population holds 90% of the land.

Angel Falls, at 3,212' the world's highest, is 15 times the height of Niagara Falls. It was discovered by U.S. aviator Jimmy Angel, who requested that his ashes be scattered there after his death.

The half of the country south of the Orinoco River contains only 4% of the population.
