9. U.S.-U.S.S.R. OLYMPIC BASKETBALL FINAL--Munich, 1972. 67
The buzzer sounded in this, the final for the gold medal, and the U.S. appeared to have recorded their 64th consecutive Olympic basketball victory, 50-49. But the officials set back the clock 1 sec., then 3; the Russians used their third chance to score the go-ahead basket, and the game was over. The Americans refused their silver medal.
10. THE 1975 WORLD SERIES--Boston and Cincinnati. 65
Game 6 of this dramatic Series between the Reds and the underdog Red Sox stands out as one of the most exciting games in Series history. The score was tied 6-6 going into the bottom of the 9th on home run fireworks by both clubs. The Red Sox loaded the bases with no outs, but Fred Lynn flied out to George Foster, who threw a strike to Johnny Bench at the plate for the tag-out on Denny Doyle. In the 11th, Boston's Dwight Evans robbed Joe Morgan of an extra-base hit and doubled Ken Griffey off first to hold the Reds at bay. In the bottom of the 12th, Carlton Fisk slammed the first pitch off the left-field foul pole for a 7-6 Boston victory. The Reds won Game 7 in the 9th, 4-3, to take the Series.
11. RED GRANGE'S BIGGEST DAY--Urbana, Ill., Oct. 18, 1924. 53
In his amazing performance against Michigan, the All-American halfback took the opening kickoff 95 yd. for a touchdown, then scored three more times in the 1st quarter as Illinois romped, 39-14. The Galloping Ghost wound up with five TDs that day and a total of 402 yd. in 21 carries.
12. HANK AARON'S 715TH HOME RUN--Atlanta, Apr. 8, 1974. 53
Millions viewed the dramatic moment on television as Aaron stepped in against the Dodgers' Al Downing and blasted his 715th career homer to overtake Babe Ruth's long-standing mark.
13. 1ST ALI-FRAZIER FIGHT--Madison Square Garden, Mar. 8, 1971. 48
This bout for the heavyweight title went to round 15, when Joe Frazier battered the champ with a series of hard punches that sent him staggering into the ropes. Frazier was awarded a unanimous decision.
14. 3RD ALI-FRAZIER FIGHT--Manila, Oct. 1, 1975. 46
Ali pounded his old nemesis in the 14th round, but Frazier stubbornly refused to go down. With his right eye almost closed, Frazier did not come out for the 15th round, and Ali retained the title.
15. BABE RUTH'S LAST HURRAH--Forbes Field, May 25, 1935. 32
Playing out his final days with Boston, an aging Ruth enjoyed one last moment of glory. Against the Pirates on May 25, he hit three home runs, including a towering blast out of Forbes Field (a baseball first), and a single. At the end of the game, the Pittsburgh fans gave him a standing ovation.
