Animal Info Cats Place of Origin

About the place of origin of the cat, history, ancestors, and classes of the animal.

The cat ran wild for many millennia after the dog had become man's willing servant. There are no definitive drawings of domestic cats in prehistoric paintings or rock carvings. Not until around 2000 B.C. did the cat appear in written and pictorial Egyptian records.

The miacid, a civetlike animal that lived 60 million years ago, was the common ancestor of both the cat family, Felidae, and the dog family, Canidae. The two basic classifications of the Felidae are the great cats and the lesser cats, which include the domestic feline. However, all cats, big or small, share similar body characteristics and habits.
