Animal Info Elephants Place of Origin

About the place of origin of elephants and their ancestor the mammoth in India.

ELEPHANTS

PLACE OF ORIGIN

The world's largest land animal, the elephant evolved from the even bigger prehistoric mammoth, which appeared millions of years ago. The mammoth, only survivor of the more primitive proboscidean, once roamed in great herds over Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. The oldest mammoth bones, discovered in India, are about 4 million years old. The mammoth became extinct at the end of the Ice Age, and its only descendants--elephants as we know them today--settled in Africa and southern Asia.
