THE WORLD'S GREATEST LINGUISTS

JEAN FRANCOIS CHAMPOLLION (1790-1832)

Champollion was primarily an archaeologist, but he mastered many languages, including Hebrew, before he was 10. By his work on the Rosetta Stone (a slab inscribed by the priests of Ptolemy V in hieroglyphics, demotic characters, and Greek, found in Rosetta, Egypt, by Napoleon's troops), he established the principles for deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphics.
