RASMUS RASK (1787-1832)

Born in a peasant's hut in Denmark, Rask mastered several languages, including Icelandic, before he finished grade school. He traveled widely and knew firsthand the 30 or more languages he spoke fluently. One of the three seminal thinkers in the science of linguistics (along with Grimm and Bopp), Rask wrote grammars of--among others--Icelandic, Anglo-Saxon, Frisian, Danish, and Old Norse.
