Accurately described by Dmitri Mendeleev of Russia in 1871 before its actual discovery by Clemens Winkler of Germany in 1886. Germanium revolutionized the world, making commercial manufacture of transistors possible. It is the most studied and best understood of all the elements. Crystalline germanium can be purified to one part in 10 billion--the greatest man-made purity.
