Country of the World Anguilla

About the country Anguilla, its location, size, population, leaders and rulers.

Size: 35 sq. mi. (91 sq. km.).

Population: 6,500.

Anguilla's long, slender outline is responsible for its nickname of Snake Island. A Caribbean island lying just east of Puerto Rico, it is level and green, with sandy beaches. Anguilla is an island of goat farmers and small towns, with few paved roads and no electricity. Anguilla, led by Ronald Webster, declared itself an independent republic in 1969. To the accompaniment of London headlines such as "The Bay of Piglets," the British invaded the colony, ostensibly to clear out Mafia interests but actually to return Anguilla to its previous status as a British associated state.
