Bahrain is an archipelago of 33 islands located in the Persian Gulf between the Qatar Peninsula and the Saudi Arabian mainland. Since 1782, Bahrain has been ruled by the reactionary al-Khalifa family, whose dynasty came under British "protection" in 1861. Nominal "independence" was acquired from Britain in 1971, and in July, 1973, the Khalifas announced elections for a National Assembly. Despite incredible manipulations by the government, progressives still managed to get elected, so in August, 1975, the Khalifas dissolved the national assembly and the constitution, and their British-run police force launched a wave of repression. As oil reserves are not expected to last beyond the 1980s, the Khalifas and their Anglo-American advisers are looking forward to the completion of a causeway to Saudi Arabia, which the Khalifas hope will turn Bahrain into another Hong Kong, a "sin city" for puritanical Saudi Arabia.
