This Atlantic island group 570 mi. southeast of North Carolina has been a British colony since 1684. According to the 1968 constitution, the queen's representative must accede to the dictates of the Cabinet in all domestic matters, except internal security and police business. U. S. naval and air bases occupy 11% of Bermuda soil under the terms of a lease which expires in the year 2040.

In December, 1977 the execution of two black political activists led to three days of rioting and the landing of British troops.
