Lay of the Land: Located in southeastern Europe, on the eastern coast of the Balkan Peninsula. The Balkan Mountains dominate the heart of the country, while the Rhodope Mountains rise in the southwest. The northern portion of the nation consists of the tableland fronting the Danube; the southern portion, known as the Thracian Plain, is drained by the Maritsa River.

Size: 43,000 sq. mi. (111,000 sq. km.), about the size of Tennessee.

Population: 8.8 million.

Who Rules: The supreme organ of state is the National Assembly, whose 400 elected members represent districts of equal population. The assembly elects the Council of State, which consists of the ministers who hold executive power.

Who REALLY Rules: The Politburo of the Bulgarian Communist party, which, together with the Agrarian and other minor parties, comprises the Fatherland Front, the only legal political entity in the state.

Bulgaria is a tightly controlled police state patterned after the U.S.S.R. Dissent is not tolerated. The people are not free to emigrate.
