NATIONS AND THEIR RULER

CAYMAN ISLANDS

Size: 100 sq. mi. (260 sq. km.).

Population: 13,000.

Three low-lying islands about 200 mi. south of Cuba, the Caymans are forested with mahogany and coconuts, both of which they have exported in the past. Historically tied to their larger neighbors, Jamaica in particular, the Caymans were variously buccaneer hangouts and bases for turtlers and loggers. Today, Britain has responsibility for the overall welfare of the islands, including defense, government, and massive budget support. Foreigners own 40% of the land on the Caymans.
