CEUTA AND MELILLA

Size: 12.5 sq. mi. (32 sq. km.).

Population: 200,000.

These tiny enclaves on Morocco's north coast represent Spain's last claim to Africa. Indeed, most residents are Spanish and proclaim strict allegiance to Madrid. Architecture, food, language, customs--all are more Andalusian than Moroccan. Temperatures rarely rise above 80 deg. or dip below 50deg.

It was the military uprising at the Melilla garrison on July 17-18, 1936, which touched off the three-year Spanish Civil War.
