Country of the World Chad

About the country Chad, its location, size, population, leaders and rulers.

Lay of the Land: In north central Africa, Chad rises from an elevation of 750 ft. at Lake Chad in the west to almost 12,000 ft. in the northern Tibesti Mountains. The heavy rains of the southern and central regions drain into Lake Chad, but the northern region is a desert.

Size: 495,752 sq. mi. (1,284,000 sq. km.).

Population: 4.3 million.

Who Rules: Chad is governed by a military council, headed by Gen. Felix Malloum.

Who REALLY Rules: Chad's former colonial master. France, props up the government with economic and military assistance.

The military government of Felix Malloum ordered the French out of the country in 1975, but in 1977 it requested and received French logistical support--chiefly air transport--for its counterinsurgency campaign against guerrilla forces. Despite the assistance, fighting continues, and it has been estimated that the central government controls only 1/3 of the country.
