Country of the World Congo
About the country Congo, its location, size, population, leaders and rulers.
NATIONS AND THEIR RULER
Lay of the Land: Located on the western coast of central Africa, the Congo has two principal rivers, the Ubangi and the Zaire (or Congo), which form the country's eastern border. Both are navigable for 1,000 mi. upstream from the capital city of Brazzaville, but the Zaire is not navigable through the downstream rapids. Most of the country is covered with dense rain forests, with a few savanna regions. The climate is extremely humid.
Size: 132,000 sq. mi. (342,000 sq. km.).
Population: 1.4 million.
Who Rules: The People's Republic of the Congo is governed by a president and council of ministers.
Who REALLY Rules: Government leaders are chosen by the Congolese Workers' party's central committee, a relatively small organization based within the labor unions and military. Marxist military leaders, who took power from another left-leaning regime in 1968, dominate the government. The Congo is generally considered pro-Soviet, but its main economic links are still with Western Europe. Consequently, its closest foreign connections appear to be with the Communist party of France.
