A former New Zealand dependency, the Cook Islands are comprised of 15 islands scattered over approximately 850,000 sq. mi. of the Pacific Ocean. In July 1978 Sir Albert Henry, who had ruled the nation since its independence in 1965, was finally deposed when it was discovered that he had spent government funds totaling $350,000 on his most recent election campaign.
