NATIONS AND THEIR RULER

DJIBOUTI

Size: 8,880 sq. mi. (23,000 sq. km.), about the size of New Hampshire.

Population: 180,000.

On May 8, 1977, residents of this hot, dry circle of sand located in East Africa at the elbow of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden approach to the Indian Ocean voted 98%-2% to end their status as the French Territory of the Afars and Issas and to become an independent nation, Africa's 49th. Formal independence came on June 27, 1977, as the French tricolor was lowered over this, France's last African colony. The infant republic's first concern is to avoid being consumed by neighboring Ethiopia and Somalia, both of whom have laid claim to Djibouti. With this in mind, 4,000 French troops have been allowed to remain on guard in the country.
