Gabon is a small, mineral-rich nation on the west coast of central Africa. It has been called the "Bastion of the Cross in Africa," since nearly half of its population is Christian. Since gaining its independence in 1960, the country has been ruled by the Bloc Democratique Gabonais. Gabon is per capita the richest nation in black Africa. To develop its resources, Gabon has encouraged foreign investment, even publishing a full-page ad in The New York Times to attract potential sources of capital or technology.
