The world's largest island, Greenland is a province of Denmark and thus sends two representatives to the Danish parliament. Native Greenlanders, who prefer to be called Inuit instead of Eskimo, are beginning to stand up for their rights. They joined other Inuits from Alaska and Canada, June 13--17, 1977, in holding the first Inuit Circumpolar Conference in Barrow, Alaska. Although Denmark has agreed to grant Greenland home rule in 1979, the mother country will retain mineral rights to the island.
