NATIONS AND THEIR RULERS

GUADELOUPE

Size: 687 sq. mi. (1,780 sq. km.).

Population: 350,000.

Though separated only by a narrow sea channel, the two eastern Caribbean islands forming Guadeloupe are completely different. Basse-Terre, the larger, is rugged, with high forested ridges, cloud-topped peaks, and a 4,800-ft.-high active volcano, La Soufriere. Grande-Terre is irregularly shaped and low, covered by fields of sugarcane. France is the dominant influence, to the extent that much of the islands' police force and civil service posts are composed of white French continentals.
