First visited by the Portuguese in 1446, the West African nation of Guinea-Bissau for centuries was a center for the slave trade. In 1961 the PAIGC (Partido Africano da Independencia da Guine e Cabo Verde) led a revolt against Portuguese rule. By 1973 the PAIGC has obtained control of two thirds of the territory and declared Guinea-Bissau's independence. A year later, after a coup in Lisbon caused by the debilitating effect of the colonial wars, the new Portuguese government recognized the PAIGC government and turned over the remaining Portuguese sections of the country, including the capital, Bissau, to the PAIGC. The PAIGC then turned its energy toward rebuilding the war-torn nation and converting it to a Marxist economy.
