Country of the World Honduras
About the country Honduras, its location, size, population, leaders and rulers.
NATIONS AND THEIR RULERS
Lay of the Land: A mountainous country in Central America, Honduras has a long Caribbean coastline but only a short Pacific one. The coastal lowlands are tropical, but the central highlands, where most of the people live, have a slightly more pleasant climate. The country is heavily forested and home to many exotic birds, insects, and reptiles.
Size: 43,277 sq. mi. (112,088 sq. km.).
Population: 3.4 million.
Who Rules: Theoretically, Honduras is a republic with president and legislature elected every six years, but constitutional succession is rare. A Defense Council of about two dozen young lieutenant colonels makes major decisions and sets policy guidelines.
Who REALLY Rules: The military is the single major force in Honduran politics. Since 1824 there have been over 120 presidents, mostly installed by the military. The U.S., with vast banana plantations and with investments in the Honduran lumber industry, is interested in maintaining a stable, cooperative government favorable to the business sector.
