Country of the World Ivory Coast
About the country Ivory Coast, its location, size, population, leaders and rulers.
NATIONS AND THEIR RULERS
Lay of the Land: In southern West Africa, the Ivory Coast is jungle-covered in its southern and central regions, giving way in the north to the thinner vegetation of the semiarid savanna. Except for the Nimba Mountains in the northwest, the terrain is flat.
Size: 124,502 sq. mi. (322,463 sq. km.).
Population: 5.2 million.
Who Rules: One-party rule has governed the country since independence. All 120 members of the unicameral legislature belong to the Ivory Coast Democratic party. Although opposition parties are legal, none have coalesced to date.
Who REALLY Rules: Pres. Felix Houphouet-Boigny has guided this country since independence. Houphouet-Boigny, a former physician and wealthy cacao farmer, drifted into politics as a spokesman for Ivorian coffee and cacao planters. Although generally well respected, his continued dependence on French assistance has upset some Ivorians. A strong Roman Catholic, Houphouet-Boigny does not smoke or drink or take coffee.
