Macao (Ao-Men to the Chinese) consists of a hilly peninsula attached to the southern Chinese province of Kwangtung plus the nearby islands of Taipa and Coloane. In 1976 the Portuguese government changed Macao's status from that of an overseas province to a Chinese territory under Portuguese administration. Portuguese Gov. Jose Garcia Leandro holds official authority, but the real power is multimillionaire Chinese businessman Ho Yin. Ho is not only head of the Macao Chinese Chamber of Commerce, but he is simultaneously a member of the Macao legislative council and the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China.
