MALDIVES

Size: 115 sq. mi. (298 sq. km.).

Population: 130,000.

The Maldive Islands are a chain of more than 1,000 low-lying coral islands stretching for 600 mi., from a point 300 mi. west of the southern tip of India, south into the Indian Ocean. Slightly more than 200 islands are inhabited. Though the islands became a republic in 1968, after eight centuries as a sultanate, the oligarchy that dominated under the sultanate remains in power. Pres. Ibrahim Nasir has begun to encourage tourism to the Maldives, particularly to Bandos Island, which he owns.
