Country of the World Martinique

About the country Martinique, its location, size, population, leaders and rulers.

Size: 420 sq. mi. (1,100 sq. km.).

Population: 360,000.

Wide plains in the south and steep forested peaks in the north distinguish this amoeba-shaped island of the Windward group in the eastern Caribbean. Martinique was discovered by Columbus in 1502, but native resistance delayed settlement of the island for over a century. A French colony was finally established in 1635, and the island produced sugarcane on slave-run plantations until the abolition of slavery in 1848. The colony became an overseas department of the France in 1946, equal in status to the French mainland departments.
