Lay of the Land: The Mongolian People's Republic is a landlocked, bowl-shaped nation in central Asia sandwiched between Soviet Siberia and the People's Republic of China. The dry, barren Gobi Desert occupies the southeastern quarter of the country, while mountain ranges rise above 13,000 ft. in the central and western sections. Mongolia is characterized by extreme variations in temperature and a relatively small amount of annual precipitation. A third of the country is covered by the Gobi Desert, but on the mountain slopes further north can be found large forests and powerful rivers.

Size: 600,000 sq. mi. (1,565,000 sq. km.), comparable to six or seven states in the U.S. Midwest, combined.

Population: 1.5 million.

Who Rules: The Communist Mongolian People's Revolutionary party, led by Yumjagiyn Tsedenbal, governs through a National Assembly and a Council of Ministers. The party has about 70,000 members.

Who REALLY Rules: The Soviet Union, which maintains as many as four infantry divisions in Mongolia along the Chinese border, has influenced Mongolian policy since the Russians helped set up the republic in the 1920s. As the only Asian member of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance, Mongolia's economy is integrated with that of the Soviet Union and its Eastern European allies.
