Country of the World Nauru

About the country Nauru, its location, size, population, leaders and rulers.

Size: 8 sq. mi. (21 sq. km.).

Population: 7,000.

"The smallest, richest republic in the world," Nauru is a tiny speck in the Pacific, close to the equator. It owns its own airline, a skyscraper office building in Melbourne, Australia, and a shipping line. Nauru's wealth comes from phosphate-rich bird droppings, or guano, which are being dug up at the rate of 1.9 million tons a year and exported at the rate of $123 million worth a year. The Nauruans' fabulous wealth has propelled them into a life filled with cars, scooters, TV, stereos, washing machines, and jets. But the good life on Nauru is only temporary, for the island is being eaten up by the big scoops at a rate of about 100 acres a year. By 1990 Nauru will be uninhabitable.
