A cigar-shaped island in the Pacific 1,000 mi. northeast of Sydney, Australia, New Caledonia is called by the French "L'Ile de lumiere" ("the Island of Light"). It is a French overseas territory, and despite internal agitation the French apparently intend to keep it that way. Enormously rich in nickel, the island is dominated by the Societe Nickel, the French nickel-mining company.
