Country of the World Senegal
About the country Senegal, its location, size, population, leaders and rulers.
NATIONS AND THEIR RULER
Lay of the Land: In westernmost West Africa, Senegal is bordered on the north by Mauritania, on the east by Mali, on the south by Guinea and Guinea-Bissau, and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. The 250-mi, tongue of Gambia juts across the southern portion of the country. The dry north anticipates the Sahara Desert. Four parallel rivers, for the most part navigable, traverse the central and southern grasslands.
Size: 75,750 sq. mi. (196,192 sq.km.), about the size of South Dakota.
Population: 4.4 million.
Who Rules: Executive power rests with the president. The Progressive Senegalese Union dominates the 100-member National Assembly.
Who REALLY Rules: Pres. Leopold Sedar Senghor has been elected and reelected continually since independence. A gifted poet, Senghor was nominated for the 1962 Nobel Prize for literature. In recent years, he has grown alarmed at increased foreign intervention in African affairs. However, this has not prevented him from allowing France to maintain military bases in Senegal.
