The Seychelles are an archipelago of about 90 islands lying near the equator in the Indian Ocean, 1,000 mi. east of Kenya. The Seychelles, which were granted independence by Britain in 1976, are governed by the Seychelles Peoples United party, led by Pres. Albert Rene. Rene's backers seized power in a June, 1977, coup carried out by 200 men with a reported 60 rifles. Previously Rene had served in a coalition government with Pres. James Mancham, who had defeated Rene in colonial elections.
