Country of the World St. Helena

About the country Saint Helena, its location, size, population, leaders and rulers.

Size: 47 sq. mi. (122 sq. km.).

Population: 5,500.

This British colony is a volcanic island in the South Atlantic about 1,200 mi. off the west coast of southern Africa. Two other islands are dependencies of St. Helena: (1) Tristan da Cunha, 1,500 mi. to the southwest, is dominated by a volcano long thought to be extinct--that is, until October, 1961, when it erupted without warning. Fortunately, the 300 islanders were safely evacuated and resettled in England. But the English climate did not sit well on Tristanese lungs, so the refugees were shipped back to their island of ashes at their own request in 1963. (2) Ascension, 750 mi. to the northwest of St. Helena.
