A British colony for 150 years and now a British associated state, St. Lucia, the largest of the Windward Islands in the eastern Caribbean, is heavily influenced by British culture, politics, and money. In 1976 the island's legislative assembly called for full independence. However, in March, 1978 the British Foreign Office postponed indefinitely plans for independence and, instead, advocated "constitutional advances" which would give islanders greater internal political freedom.
