Lying astride the international date line in the Pacific, Tonga is known as "the place where time begins" or as "the Islands of Tomorrow." Although there are more than 150 islands in the group, the islands' total area is half the size of Los Angeles. The last remaining Polynesian monarchy, Tonga is the only South Seas island group to have escaped the imposition of foreign rule, although it became a British protectorate in 1900. The family of King Tupou IV has ruled Tonga since the 1840s.
