Country of the World Tuvalu

About the country Tuvalu, its location, size, population, leaders and rulers.

Size: 10 sq. mi. (25 sq. km.).

Population: 6,000.

Scheduled for independence from British control Tuvalu in the South Pacific has been threshing out such questions as whether to have a republic or a monarchy. Eight elected members of the Tuvaluan House of Assembly recently made a tour of all nine of the islands that will comprise Tuvalu and heard the views of every man, woman, and child in the islands. The committee has recommended that a 12-member parliament should elect the prime minister, and that islands with more than 1,000 population should have two M.P.s, and the remainder one. Comprised of the former Ellice Islands, Tuvalu actually came into official existence as a British interim colony on Oct. 1, 1977 and achieved full independence on Oct. 1, 1978.
