NATIONS AND THEIR RULER
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
Size: 32,277 sq. mi. (83,600 sq. km.).
Population: 242,000, of whom only about 160,000 are citizens of the U.A.E. The rest are immigrant workers: Baluchis from Iran and Pakistan; Indians; Koreans; and migrants from other Arab countries.
In southwest Asia along the southern shore of the Persian Gulf and the western reaches of the Gulf of Oman are seven tiny sheikhdoms--Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras al-Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm al-Qaiwain, and Ajman--which joined together in 1971-1972 to form the United Arab Emirates. In 1960 oil was struck in large quantities in Abu Dhabi, and lesser discoveries followed in Dubai, Sharjah, and Ras al-Khaimah. Dubai supplements its oil income by serving as a source of duty-free goods, which are smuggled into India, Pakistan, Iran, and other states in the region. The political structure of the U.A.E. and its component members allows no trade unions, political parties, free press, or elected bodies. A 20,000-man army supervised by the British keeps order in the country. For U.A.E. citizens as a whole, per capita income is $11,000, and for Abu Dhabians, an incredible $33,000.
