NATIONS AND THEIR RULERS

VIRGIN ISLANDS, U.S.

Size: 133 sq. mi. (344 sq. km.).

Population: 110,000.

Located about 1,000 mi. southeast of Miami, these 50 or so Caribbean islands are completely dominated by the U.S. economically and politically. Initially acquired as a convenient outpost for the defense of the Panama Canal, the Virgins are now almost exclusively tourist-oriented. Though a constitutional convention has been organized, there seems to be little real sentiment for either statehood or independence. Racial tensions persist between the majority blacks and the more recent white immigrants from the U.S. The Virgin Islands are visited by more cruise ships than any other area in the world.
