Western Samoa, along with its sister islands in American Samoa, has long been thought of as the cradle of Polynesian culture. The 16 islands of the Samoa group lie about 2,300 mi. southwest of Hawaii and about the same distance northeast of Australia. Western Samoa became one of the first independent nations in the South Pacific, in 1962. Many Western Samoans are now working in the wealthier American Samoa, which has received large doses of American aid. Western Samoa has little in the way of resources--mostly fish--and is economically undeveloped.
