Country of the World Yemen Arab Republic

About the country Yemen Arab Republic or North Yemen, its location, size, population, leaders and rulers.

Lay of the Land: In southwest Asia in the southwest corner of the Arabian Peninsula, the Yemen Arab Republic lies just north of Bab el Mandeb, the strategic passage between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. A hot, sandy, semidesert strip, the Tihama, separates the Red Sea coast from the generally well-watered mountainous area of the interior. The mountains, which are heavily terraced for agriculture, reach heights of nearly 12,000 ft. in some places. Normally abundant rainfall and an agreeable climate account for North Yemen's relatively heavy population density and make it potentially one of the more prosperous agricultural areas on the Arabian Peninsula.

Size: 75,000 sq. mi. (195,000 sq. km.).

Population: 7.2 million.

Who Rules: The Revolutionary Command Council, headed by an elected president.

Who REALLY Rules: Military officers of the Zaidi sect, with direct financial and material support from Saudi Arabia, the U.S., and the World Bank, and by the remittances from Yemenis working abroad, including some 5,000 emigrants in Detroit. The largest contingent are the 800,000 North Yemenis in Saudi Arabia. Remittances from abroad totaled $600 million in 1976 and are now approaching $1 billion.
