Greatest Scary Ghost Story in History Part 2

An account of the greatest ghost story ever authenticated in the files of the Society for Psychical Research.

The case is famous because it is the best evidenced in existence, and it is the only recorded case where people have actually attempted to capture a ghost. The identity of the ghost was clearly established as that of Imogen Swinhoe, who had lived unhappily in the house for 10 years and left it, and her husband, shortly before his death.

It was assumed for a time that the ghost was not seen after 1899, but then a woman reported seeing it in 1903. Later, when the house became a boarding school for boys, there were stories of a lady being encountered on the stairs, in the corridors, and in the garden, before the house was closed once more.

Andrew MacKenzie, an occult and crime writer who is a member of the society, has reports of the figure being seen by three people in a house near Garden Reach in 1958 and 1961. He feels that "when conditions are unfavorable for the manifestation of phenomena in a particular place, a haunting ceases there, but could well continue elsewhere in that vicinity where conditions are, if only temporarily, more favorable." He is currently assessing even more reports from this same area. Noises are still heard up to the present day, and the ghostly figure was last seen as recently as 1974.

The society would like ghost seers to report their experiences as naturally as they would report the behavior of a faulty electrical appliance. For psychical experiences don't just happen to mediums. They occur in the lives of perfectly ordinary people on perfectly ordinary days. A practical guide to ghost seers would include the following points: (1) Tell someone first. (2) Write an accurate testimony of the events which take place as soon as they have happened, paying particular attention to detail. (3) Get as many reliable witnesses as you can to substantiate your story. (4) Don't be deterred by the fear of being thought odd. (5) Send all information to the Society for Psychical Research, 1 Adam and Eve Mews, Kensington, London, England; or to the American Society for Psychical Research, 5 West 73rd Street, New York, N.Y. 10023.
