Founded in 1968 as a nonprofit, charitable trust whose goal is "to eliminate or alleviate fear, pain, and suffering for all animals, be they domestic livestock, pets, native or exotic wildlife." Publicizes animal abuses through the media, including newspaper and magazine advertisements and radio and television public service announcements. Keeps members informed about animal problems and encourages active participation to correct abuses. Produces educational materials and disseminates pamphlets and brochures. Cost of membership is $10 per year and includes a subscription to a quarterly magazine, Mainstream. 83,000 members.
Anti-Slavery Society for the Protection of Human Rights, 60 Weymouth Street, London, W1N 4DX, England. Founded in 1839, the society is the sole source of published material on contemporary slavery throughout the world. Has consultative status with the U.N. Economic and Social Council. Aims to eradicate slavery in all forms and to promote the well-being of indigenous peoples. In 1974 the society helped to buy from debt bondage 120 survivors of the Andoke (a Colombian Amerindian tribe that numbered 10,000 a hundred years ago). The tribe was trained and equipped to survive independently. Publishes a newsletter, various pamphlets, and an annual report. Cost of membership is pound 3 per year. 800 members.
