Tattoo Club of America, Inc., 112 W. First Street, Mt. Vernon, N. Y. 10550. Founded in 1974 "to provide a means of communication for tattoo devotees so that they can share news and ideas about the art form." Requirements for joining: Person must be tattooed, must have contributed something to the art of tattooing, and must be recommended by a member in good standing in the club. Publishes a quarterly newsletter. Membership is free. Sponsors conventions, art shows, and an annual party. Members include Sen. Barry Goldwater, Ray Bradbury, Hugh Hefner, and Margaret Mead. 6,000 members.
Train Collectors Association, P.O. Box 248, Strasburg, Pa. 17579. Founded in 1954 "to further the knowledge and historical importance of tinplate trains." (When used to describe toy trains, "tinplate" means mass-produced toy model trains, as opposed to hand-built or scale models.) Operates a museum and research library in Strasburg. Publishes Train Collectors Quarterly and is preparing a book, Lionel Train, Standard of the World. Holds a national convention each year in June. 10,000 members, 16 chapters.
Turtles International Association, Ltd., P.O. Box 96, Westchester, III. 60153. Founded in 1931 as a volunteer organization dedicated to promoting the philosophy of Turtlism. The official turtle creed: "Turtles are bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, fearless, and unafraid folk with a fighter pilot attitude. Turtles think clean, have fun a lot, and recognize the fact that you never get anyplace worthwhile in life unless you stick your neck out." Sponsors a number of special events and projects including: the Turtle Queen Pageant, the International Turtle Creepstakes, and the Festival of the Hare. Sells a multitude of official turtle accessories--pins, jacket patches, bumper stickers, stamps, T-shirts. Your membership card is your official license to go forth into the world and initiate new turtles. Publishes a bimonthly newsletter, The Turtle Express. A lifetime membership (100 years) is $1. All proceeds from dues and turtle accessories go to the care of handicapped children. Members include Johnny Carson, Dean Martin, George Gobel, and former astronaut Wally Schirra. There are 5 1/2 million card-carrying turtles in the U.S.
