UNCENSORED HIGHLIGHTS IN THE HISTORY OF SEX

1973 During a peace march on the White House, Robert A. Martin, a 28-year-old Quaker pacifist, was arrested. After refusing to pay a $10 bond, he was sent to the District of Columbia jail. At the end of his first week, he was moved to a wing where prisoners with records for violence were kept. In two days he was raped 50 times.

1973 Promiscuity among Soviet youth was on the rise, according to sociologist Anatoly G. Kharchev. He summarized the results of a poll of Odessa teenagers for the youth newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets: "Roughly a quarter of those polled had already had premarital sex. Only 12% of the girls and 7% of the boys thought their sexual affairs sprang from love." Dr. Kharchev warned his young readers against the ravages of impotence, premarital pregnancy, and venereal disease and came down particularly hard on public necking.

1976 Angered by a Peitou, Taiwan, hotel owner's "insulting remark," 641 licensed--and dozens of unlicensed--prostitutes in that hot-spring resort went out on strike to defend "their dignity and self-respect." The women, members of the Union of Families of Happiness, spent most of their strike time praying in local Buddhist temples.

1976 A Supreme Court decision enabled Hustler magaziner publisher Larry Flynt, porn film star Harry Reems, and others to be indicated by local courts holding jurisdiction over areas in the U.S. which they had never visited. The charge: conspiring to distribute obscene materials.

1976 At a prison in Caracas, Venezuela, homosexual and transsexual inmates were housed in a special wing, established to protect them from attacks by heterosexual prisoners. Its 820 inmates were permitted to dress like women, use makeup and female hormones, and mix freely among themselves. As Col. Luis Nieto Sanchez, supervisor of prisons in the Venezuelan capital, explained: "Allowing the homosexuals their extravagances makes them adapt better to prison life and facilitates their return to society."

1976 Nearly 70% of American couples of a child-bearing age were using contraceptives of one sort or another. Of those, more than one third were using the pill.

1977 An Ohio plastic surgeon has performed operations on more than 1,000 women "to realign the clitoris" of each "and to lengthen vaginal muscles in ways that make direct contact between the clitoris and penis inevitable," according to Vogue magazine. Cost of the operation: $1,500.
