Jupiter - Lore, Myths, and Legends

About Jupiter, lore, myths, legends, and theories from different cultures.

Lore: Jupiter is among the brightest of objects in the night sky and one of the five planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn) visible to the unaided eye. The Greeks of classical antiquity believed the planets to be made of heavenly substances and credited them with having the same powers and influences as the gods whose names they bore. Employing these concepts, the Greeks amplified and refined the primitive religion of astrology. But the choice of the name Jupiter (the Roman term for Zeus, the leader of the gods) for the fifth planet in order of distance from the sun proved to be singularly appropriate.
