About ten unconsummated marriages among famous couples including Hitler, Frederick the Great, Marie Stopes and more.
10 UNCONSUMMATED MARRIAGES
6. FREDERICK THE GREAT OF PRUSSIA AND ELISABETH CHRISTINE (married 1733)
At the age of 16, in the decadent court of Augustus the Strong in Dresden, Frederick met two women, became intimate with them, and contracted syphilis. His doctors cured the disease but left him mutilated and impotent. He was unable to consummate his marriage to the pretty Elisabeth Christine.
7. JOHN RUSKIN AND EUPHEMIA "EFFIE" GRAY (married 1848)
An only child and mother-ridden, the art critic John Ruskin married Effie, a pretty but ordinary girl. On their wedding night he was so appalled at the sight of her pubic hair that he was unable to bring himself to have intercourse with her. Six years later, they divorced. Effie married the painter John Everett Millais. Later, Ruskin had another unconsummated love affair with a young girl, Rose La Touche, who was only 10 years old when he first became inflamed with passion for her.
8. MARIE STOPES AND REGINALD GATES (married 1911)
Brilliant Englishwoman Marie Stopes was 31 years old and a prominent paleobotanist when she met Canadian botanist Reginald Gates at an American Association of Science meeting in St. Louis. Within a week, he had asked her to marry him. But the marriage, for a reason unknown to her, was a failure, and she was on the verge of suicide. It was at the British Museum, where she researched sex books, that she found the reason for her unhappiness. Her husband was impotent. With the marriage officially dissolved, Marie Stopes went on to work for sex education for women and the dissemination of birth control information.
9. EMMA GOLDMAN AND JAMES COLTON (married 1926)
A fiery Russian Jew who believed in anarchism, Emma Goldman once said, "Women need not always keep their mouths shut and their wombs open." While a teenager, she married Jacob Kershner, who suffered from impotence, and the relationship was an unhappy one. Much later, Colton married Emma purely as a favor, to enable her to become a British citizen. In her 993-page autobiography, Living My Life, Emma devoted one sentence to her marriage with Colton.
10. ADOLF HITLER AND EVA BRAUN (married 1945)
The Nazi fuhrer Adolf Hitler, in whose regime Germany fought W.W. II and murdered 6 million Jews, was sexually peculiar. He enjoyed pornography more than love. His niece, Geli Raubal, committed suicide in 1931 after a three-year pseudo-affair with him. According to many authorities, he never consummated his relationship with his constant companion Eva Braun, not even after their marriage on Apr. 28, 1945. The two committed suicide two days later, on Apr. 30.
